McIlroy started the championship with a poor four over round of 76 on Friday, but a strong round of 65 - seven under - on Saturday saw the Holywood golfer move into contention.
The improved round revived memories of McIlroy's famous 2010 victory which saw him climb up the leaderboard to give him his first PGA Tour victory at the same tournament.
However, it was not to be and Sunday's round of two under saw the world number 11 finish on eight under, six shots off winner JB Holmes.
On his 25th birthday, Rory got the day off to a bad start with a bogey on the first.
He steadied and recorded a run of five straight pars before a birdie on the seventh put him on even par for the day.
McIlroy went on to birdie the eighth but dropped another shot at the ninth hole.
At the turn he improved slightly to score three birdies and only the one bogey to finish the round on 70.
Meanwhile, Gareth Maybin carded a three-over-par 75 in the final round of The Championship event at Tampines in Singapore.
The Ballyclare player finished the tournament at Laguna National on five under and in tie for 54th.
