The Co Down golfer could face a fine over his behaviour at the 12th hole on Thursday, which he admitted was a fit of frustration over his poor form.
"It's just pretty disappointing," McIlroy admitted, after finishing his round six shots off the pace.
"I feel like I'm playing pretty well. I just need to go out there and shoot the scores."
Throwing the club was his response to going out of bounds by an inch and eventually picking up a fourth bogeys in five holes.
Tournament director David Garland hadn't seen the incident, but said: "I'll be requesting a tape and if any breach of the tour's guidelines on course etiquette is found, then the appropriate action will be taken in due course."
It is unlikely that any action would be taken before the tournament ends though.
