The Portrush man was beaten one up by Victor Dubuisson in the quarter finals.

McDowell, who fought back in his previous three matches against Gary Woodland, Hideki Matsuyama and Hunter Mahan, had never stood on a on any tee with the lead this week.

He needed just two holes to go ahead against the Frenchman, but Dubuisson fought back superbly and after taking the lead for the third time on the 16th - while McDowell three-putted it for a second day - held onto it with brilliant par saves on the final two holes.

The 23-year-old will now play Ernie Els in the last four.
