He finished third on -20, four shots behind winner Dustin Johnson and one behind second placed Ian Poulter, with a final round of 66.
Overnight leader Johnson saw his advantage wiped out after three holes, as McDowell and Poulter went in front with three and two birdies each, while the American bogeyed the first.
Birdies on the eighth and ninth moved Johnston back into a share of the lead.
McDowell hit birdies on the seventh, twelfth and fourteenth holes but Johnston completed his recovery with a strong run on the final six holes, which he played in five under par.
The 26-year-old finished his round on -6 to claim his eighth PGA Tour victory and prize money of £856,000 at Sheshan International Golf Club.
McDowell said: "Obviously there is a pang of disappointment, but generally just very proud of myself the way I played this week, tee to green especially.
"On the greens, room for improvement. But I didn't make a bogey all weekend. I shot 14 under on the weekend. Dustin Johnson was in a different league off the tee and gave us a little bit of a sniff and then promptly slammed the door."
Rory McIlroy was in tied sixth place on -15 after a final round of 69.
