The Northern Irishman is six shots off the lead after carding a level-par 71 on Saturday.
It was a case of slow and steady for McDowell for the first half of his round, making par on every hole on the front nine.
However it was on the back nine that it began to get interesting.
After two more parred holes, the Portrush golfer dropped a shot at the twelfth when his long putt came up just short of the hole.
There was another bogey at the very next hole too - this time McDowell overcooked his effort, and all of a sudden the chances of a final day charge began to look remote.
But he responded magnificently at the next hole with a superb chip to the green setting him up for a birdie.
There was another bogey at 15, but McDowell finished strongly with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes, including one at 18 right on the weather-warning hooter.
It left him still in contention heading into the final day.
