The defending champion slipped from five under to two under to drop to nine shots behind leader Tiger Woods.
Portrush man McDowell scored four birdies, however, dropped shots on the fourth, seventh, 13th and 15th along with a triple bogey on the eighth hole left him tied sixth in the tournament overall with a round of three over for the day.
Compatriot Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, carded the best round of the day in the 18-strong field.
The former world number one, who has struggled throughout the week, carded a four-under-par 68 to move into a share of 11th.
He holed six birdies, with the only blemish a double bogey at the 15th.
An even par 72 was enough to keep Tiger Woods two shots clear at the tournament ahead of the final round.
