Former world title challenger Paul McCloskey suffered a surprise defeat on his return to the ring on Saturday night, losing a points decision to journeyman fighter Dave Ryan in Leeds.

McCloskey, who was making his first appearance since beating Manuel Perez at the Odyssey Arena in September 2012, had moved up to welterweight for his comeback contest, and looked to have shaken off any ring-rust when he dropped his larger opponent with a body shot in the fourth round.

However, Ryan hauled himself from the canvas and mounted a comeback, eventually winning the bout on a narrow points decision.

The defeat means the 34-year-old former British and European champion, who controversially lost to Amir Khan in his only world title shot in 2011, has now lost two of his last three fights and takes his professional record to 24-3.

Boxed well but it was against an also ran, in this class he should be rumping home! He had his time three years ago! Ps hands are kept too low and the reflex is not what it was, hence too slow. Ps he was a good pro with a good record but missed his big chance with a.k , should stick to working in the shop for now

Not too old and not too slow but its the internal politics in boxing has prevented Mc closkey going forward i had him two a point a head after watching it three times he does change his style too much though but he can scrap and take as well as give he has always boxed well at the end i think he needs to work harder in the early rounds
