Sunderland winger James McClean vented his frustration after Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni left him on the bench as team-mates struggled to a lucky 2-1 win over Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan, who are ranked 142nd in the world, outplayed the Irish until veteran Robbie Keane scored from the penalty spot after 87 minutes in their opening World Cup qualifier in Astana.

Kevin Doyle then blasted home in the dying seconds to hand the beleaguered manager a much-needed three points.

Kazakhstan had taken the lead nine minutes before half-time through Kairat Nurdauletov.

Until the final five minutes of the game it appeared the Emerald Isle were set to stoop to a new low as Trapattoni remains under pressure following the country's poor performance at Euro 2012.

Trapattoni brought Doyle and Shane Long off the bench on Friday night but did not call upon McClean - a move that has clearly enraged the 23-year-old Derry man.

Tweeting from his official account @JMcC_23, he said: "Delighted as a fan we got the win. Personal level #fuming #f*****joke #embarrassing." The tweet was later deleted.

Before the game McClean, who is performing well for Sunderland, had made clear he was fit to start.

Trapattoni, who is aware of McClean's rant, could fine the former Derry City player or pull him out of the Republic's squad for their friendly against Oman at Craven Cottage on Tuesday.

Last week, Darron Gibson refused a call-up to the squad for these two games after Trapattoni refused to bring him on as a substitute during Euro 2012.

On Friday night the manager admitted his side were fortunate to start their Group C campaign with a victory.

He said: "I think it's honest to say that we have been a little bit lucky in this game.

"I think we had a psychological block after we conceded because usually we have a good reaction when that happens but we didn't today."

Keane said: "It wasn't a good performance but at the end of the day it doesn't matter. We have three points on the board."

Hi guys it is always easy to hide how bad the players were and blame on the outsider, it is football and he is the manager he makes decisions that he has to live with afterwards, since went the little snotty footbal players are now sort of dictating when and where they are to play, they should shut up or leave no one holds the sky pver our heads, you join the squad because you are par of it no matter what otherwise leave people who are working to achieve results alone. This is not a dallas episode where if you have money you do what you want.... youjng rich and famous the players think they are intouchable things like this should bring them to earth
