The midfielder was an unused substitute in the 1 - 0 win over Russia last week in World Cup Qualifying.
McCann wishes to concentrate on his role as a Player/Coach with Peterborough United.
"My main objective is to get Peterborough back in to the Championship and to concentrate on coaching with the Under-15s.
"If I'm ever needed to play again for Northern Ireland then I will be there," McCann wrote on his Twitter account.
"I'm at an age where club football, my coaching and family come first.
"I have decided to take time away from international football - I haven't retired as such," he added.
McCann made his Northern Ireland debut in 2001 against Malta, and has won 39 caps.
