His interim title was upgraded by the governing body and means that his upcoming fight against Mikkel Kessler will be in the defence of the world title.
If Magee beats the Dane he will be in line to fight unified world champion Andre Ward next year.
The Lisburn southpaw has competed at the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta, and has held the European, IBO and British super middleweight titles.
He also won a bronze medal for Northern Ireland at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
The fight with Kessler will take place on December 8th in Denmark.
