Martin Lindsay produced a spectacular victory to become the new British featherweight champion when he beat Paul Appleby in the sixth round in Belfast.
Belfast man Lindsay produced a right-hand over the top after defending champion Appleby left himself exposed but it was the left hooks which accounted for the Edinburgh fighter at the Ulster Hall.
Lindsay produced great combination work throughout the fight, his right-hander clearly having Appleby in trouble as he staggered against the ropes, and although the young Scot tried to hit back the referee stopped the fight in the sixth round.
Appleby, 21, had started well, landing a punch to the head but a clearly fired-up Lindsay countered with a right-hander and three shots to the head and he appeared the sharper of the two fighters in the opening round.
Lindsay went on the attack in the second as Appleby was slow to settle as his shots fell short characterised by a couple of wild swings.
Appleby finished on top in the third keeping his guard high and connected with body shots.
However, Lindsay produced a sustained attack in the fourth with Appleby on the ropes but the 21-year-old hit back.
The fifth was close and the intensity was relentless from both fighters but the big right hander from Lindsay had Appleby on the back foot and the referee quite rightly stopped the bout with the young boxer clearly unable to offer more resistance.
