It was a difficult night for the British side as their world number three opponents dominated throughout the match, racing to a 4-1 lead at half time.

But the hosts delivered on their promise to attack and entertain as they chased the game, going after the Dutch at every opportunity.

Goals began to rain in the second period as Team GB were picked off at will by Holland.

The final scoreline of 9-2 is their heaviest international defeat and means they have failed spectacularly in their bid to win Olympic gold for the first time since 1988.

However they will now take on Australia in Saturday's bronze medal play-off - a repeat of their 3-3 pool encounter - while the Dutch face defending champions Germany.
