The Mournemen were impressive in their demolition of a poor Louth outfit, racking up 4-16 on their way to a 19 point victory over Aidan O'Rourke's side at Pairc Esler.
Down stormed out of the blocks and Donal O'Hare's goal helped them to 1-8 without reply before Louth briefly stemmed the flow with a point from Darren Clarke.
James McCartan's side led by 1-11 to 0-2 at the break, and the hosts continued their domination in the second half with Benny Coulter netting twice after coming on as a late substitute.
Conor Maginn struck late on for Down's fourth goal as they earned victory by 4-16 to 0-9 to move to the top of the table.
Elsewhere, Jamie Clarke was the star for Armagh as they overcame Meath at the Athletic Grounds.
Clarke, who was a member of the UUJ team beaten in the Sigerson Cup final the previous weekend, top-scored with 11 points to cancel out two goals from Michael Newman and see his side over the line.
The victory was Armagh's first win of the league campaign.
