Laverty beat off stiff competition from Michael Dunlop to claim the coveted Joey Dunlop Award for the second time, with the Ballymoney man claiming the Road Racer of the Year title.

The 27-year-old Toomebridge rider, who currently resides in Monaco, finished as runner-up in last season's World Superbike Championship, securing nine race wins in the process.

Speaking from his Monte Carlo home, Laverty apologised for being unable to attend the bash due to testing commitments with his new Suzuki team.

"I'm over the moon to get this and I couldn't be happier with the Joey Dunlop award - it means so much to me with Joey being a hero of mine", Laverty said.

"I'll head off to Spain [for testing] with a smile on my face and know I have something to aim for in 2014.

"If I can bring home that world title then who knows, I might be able to lifty this award again as well."

Twenty-four-year-old Dunlop scooped the Road Racer of the Year prize after a stellar season which included four victories at the 2013 Isle of Man TT.
