This tense derby game looked to be going Monaghan's way until the final few nervous minutes in Clones.
The Orchard County scored first through Jamie Clarke, but Monaghan soon fought into the lead with frees by Rory Beggan and Jack McCarron.
It was a tight match throughout as the teams were level at both half-time and full-time, indeed seven times in all.
Jamie Clarke and Stefan Campbell were instrumental for keeping Paul Grimley's side in the match until the end.
But it was substitute Rory Grugan who was the hero of the hour. He composed himself to slot home the free which levelled proceedings in the dying minutes.
The Counties will now replay the match next Sunday 6 July at St Tiernach's Park in Clones.
