The Belfast Giants player who suffered a season-ending knee injury when a linesman fell on his leg - while trying to break up an on-ice altercation - is undergoing surgery on Friday.

Canadian forward Benoit Doucet seriously damaged ligaments in his knee during the incident in November, as his side took on the Braehead Clan at the Odyssey Arena.

"I'm sure our fans will send him their best wishes," Giants head coach Doug Christiansen said.

"He's being treated by one of the top knee surgeons in Northern Ireland. He has a long recovery ahead of him, but the first step is the operation on Friday.

"As an organisation, we will do our best to ensure the quickest recovery possible."

The Giants, who are preparing to face the Coventry Blaze in back-to-back clashes at the Odyssey on Friday and Saturday nights, are also still without the services of defenseman James Hutchinson.

The Tynemouth native has been back skating as he recovers from injury and is making progress, but won't play this weekend.

"He might be back this month," Christiansen added. "The medical staff will evaluate him on Friday and give an updated diagnosis."

The Giants will be boosted though by the return to the line-up of forward Paul Deniset, who was part of 2008/9 team and has signed up again after stints in the top leagues in Denmark and France.

Belfast Giants face off against the Coventry Blaze at 7.30pm on Friday and again at 7pm on Saturday, with both games being played at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.
