Newtownards cyclist Martyn Irvine was left bitterly disappointed after finishing 11th in the men's omnium at the London 2012 Olympic Games - but has vowed to use his frustration to push himself on.

Irvine had an optimistic hope of pushing for the podium, but his medal chances were gone by the time he reached the halfway stage of the six-discipline event in 10th place on Saturday.

The 27-year-old set his sights on improving that placing on Sunday as he took on the individual pursuit, 15km scratch race and 1km time-trial but instead slipped back to 13th in the final classification.

"I'm still gutted, it just opened my eyes and it just wasn't meant to be," he told Press Association Sport.

"I was standing trying to look on whatever bright side there was today and it still didn't go my way. The engine's just not there.

"I showed I'm fit to be here, I wasn't too outclassed but it doesn't really make up for a poor performance overall.

"I'll keep training hard, put this in the memory bank and use it as a motivation for the Commonwealth Games and maybe Rio in 2016."

Irvine does not have world-class facilities on his doorstep like some of his rivals in the field, meaning he faces time-consuming trips to get the necessary training in.

One day he would like Irish riders to have it easier than that, though he accepts things are unlikely to change in the near future.

"There's a lot of travelling and a lot of air miles in my training," he said.

"It would be the dream to have a training and racing facility in Ireland, that'd be awesome. I'd love to see that before I hang up my wheels, but maybe it's something I can push for when I'm older."
