The St Patrick's Day win came a day after their male counterparts were defeated in Rome, narrowly avoiding the dreaded wooden spoon as they finished fifth.

In bad weather conditions, full-back Niamh Briggs' two penalties settled a hard-fought game in their favour and a fifth win of the Six Nations campaign.

Ireland only conceded two tries and 23 points in their previous four games - as they completed a memorable clean sweep.

Italy's Veronica Schiavon kicked the hosts into an early lead with a third-minute penalty, but the Irish battled back with Briggs replying in kind for Ireland ten minutes later.

It remained 3-3 up to half-time with Briggs, who went closest to scoring the game's only try, missing an injury-time penalty.

Eleven minutes into the second half Briggs sent over what proved to be the match winning score from another penalty.

And Ireland held on to secure their first Six Nations Grand Slam after clinching their first Championship last weekend.

Sports Minister congratulates Ireland's women-historic Grand Slam winners

Stormont Sports Minister Cáral Ní Chuilín congratulated the team on their "historic victory" on Sunday night.

She said: "Throughout this season the Irish women showed determination and discipline and it all paid off today culminating in a St Patrick's Day victory to savour for a long time to come."
