Ryan Hall scored a hat-trick as the hosts ran in eight tries to comfortably win the Group A game at John Smith's Stadium, in front of a sell-out crowd of 24,375.
Ireland were 30 points behind after 24 minutes with England's tries coming from Tom Briscoe, who scored twice, and Brett Ferres.
Kallum Watkins and Rangi Chase added to the total in the second half to give Steve McNamara's side their first win of the 2013 cup.
Ireland never looked capable of getting back into the game, and were left without the ball for long periods against a confident England team which was roared on by the crowd.
They now face the daunting prospect of beating tournament favourites Australia in Limerick next weekend to keep their dream alive.
Ireland coach Mark Aston said: "We got a bit of an education in how to play a game of rugby league but I was immensely proud of the boys in the second half.
"We've got something to build on, we'll dust ourselves down because we've got another challenge next week against Australia."
