Darren Sutherland
An inquest into the death of Olympic bronze medal-winning boxer Darren Sutherland was opened and adjourned on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Irishman, tipped as a possible future professional world champion, was found hanged at his flat in Bromley, south London, by his promoter and friend Frank Maloney on Monday.

Friends and family did not attend Croydon Coroner's Court, where Dr Roy Palmer adjourned the hearing to a date yet to be set.

The Metropolitan Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Sutherland, nicknamed The Dazzler, won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics as a middleweight before turning professional late last year and joining Maloney's camp.

Maloney, 55, was kept in hospital suffering from shock after discovering Sutherland's body.

Tests later revealed that he had suffered a heart attack, probably while he was at ringside in Brentwood, Essex, on Friday night watching one of his other fighters, John McDermott, lose on points to Tyson Fury.

Sutherland, who had switched fighting weights to be a super-middleweight, had won his first four professional bouts and was due to fight again next month.

He had lived with Maloney and his family for four months after moving from Navan in County Meath late last year before moving to his own flat in February.
