Derby forward Jamie Ward has been ruled out of Northern Ireland's upcoming World Cup qualifying games after suffering an injury at the weekend.

Ward, who was in line to feature in this month's home clashes against Russia and Israel, started on Saturday against Leicester but lasted just 63 minutes.

He will be replaced by Aberdeen's Josh Magennis.

Magennis came on as a late substitute in last month's friendly against Malta but had not been named in manager Michael O'Neill's initial squad.

A statement from the Irish FA said: "Injury has forced Jamie Ward to withdraw from the Northern Ireland squad. Aberdeen's Josh Magennis has been called up to the squad for the World Cup Qualifiers against Russia and Israel."

Ward's injury is a blow as striker Kyle Lafferty is set to miss through suspension.

Northern Ireland will host Russia on Friday night, before facing Israel at home on Tuesday 26 March.
