Hutton, known as 'Pizza', played a record 600 times for the club and was captain for the Brandywell club's last title win and its famous European runs.

He has been handed a contract until the end of the season.

He told UTV: "The board decided to give me the job until at least the end of the season.

"It's up to me to impress upon them, to do a good job and then we will take it from there.

"But I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Hutton retuned to the Brandywell six months ago as assistant to Collins.

With just two wins in 12 league games, discontent in the stands and rumoured unrest in the dressing room, the Dubliner's time in charge was cut short over the weekend.

Arthur Duffy of the Derry Journal explained: "Roddy came in and most people would have felt it was just a case of tinkering with the squad and maybe adding one or two players.

"But he came in rebuilt the squad and changed the whole ethos of the team.

"Derry was always recognised as an attractive free-flowing footballing side but this changed with his ultra-defensive mode."

Hutton's first match is away to Cork City and he says the side will play their way out of trouble.

Hutton added: "We've got some quality young players and its about giving them that belief and the confidence to go out and express themselves and to do it constantly.

"But we need everybody pulling in the same direction, the supporters as well, we need each other and it's important that we rally round because there is still a long way to go in the season."
