At one stage Hoey pegged back eventual winner Ross Fisher's five stroke lead to just one shot.

But despite an impressive round of four under, Hoey was unable to stop Fisher claiming the title.

Hoey moved to within touching distance with a birdie from 30 feet at the 11th, but a double bogey at the next stalled his progress and he went on to tie second place with local hopeful Danie van Tonder.

The second place finish sees the pair share a prize fund of €138,000.
