 Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland golfer Michael Hoey fired a final round 67 to finish in a tie for seventh place at the Three Irish Open at Killarney Golf and Country Club.

The professional from Shandon Park golf club in Belfast took advantage of ideal scoring conditions to card six birdies and two bogeys on his way to a final round of four under.

Hoey moved to within one shot of the lead early on in the round but England's Ross Fisher proved too strong for the field.

Fisher, who has all but secured his place in the Ryder Cup team for Celtic Manor in October, was impressive despite a shaky start that saw him drop a shot in his first four holes.

Fisher soon regrouped and made the turn in three under par to leave him at -15, two clear of Ireland's Padraig Harrington.

Harrington soon began to pile the pressure on Fisher as the local crowd roared home every putt.

The three time major winner pulled to within one of the lead at the 16th with an eagle, but Fisher responded with two birdies on his way home to secure victory by two shots with an 18 under par total.

Darren Clarke was the next best of the Northern Irish, closing the week out with a round of 69, to finish at eight under.

Graeme McDowell, who had holed a monster putt on the 18th on Friday to make the cut, carded a closing round of 71 and Rory McIlroy will have had a week to forget as he shot a final 71 to end on two under.

Irish golf's purple period continues which is sure to give Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie confidence with the match against the USA only eight weeks away.
