It has been a week of celebrations for the young skier, who secured Team GB's first ever gold in the Winter Paralympics in Sochi.

On Monday the visually-impaired athlete from Bangor, Co Down and her other team mates were guests at No 10 Downing street, where they met with Prime Minister David Cameron.

The 28-year-old and her guide Charlotte Evans claimed victory by completing the Super-G category in one minute, 28.72 seconds.

On Friday evening, friends, family and supporters - including Northern Ireland's other gold medal winning athlete Dame Mary Peters - were there to welcome her home.

An overwhelmed Gallagher told UTV: "To come home to something like this, all the people who supported my all of the way, when I used to tell them 'yeah, I go skiing', (and) they'd been up early in the morning on the edge of their seats, I finally get to come home to them and share a gold medal with them, so I'm so happy.

"It's so exciting that I'm from Northern Ireland and I get to be part of something so much bigger, we get to be the first winter paralympians to win the gold. It just shows how much work we put in to get on the world stage."

Sports Minister Caral Ni Chuilin was also there to greet the athlete and praised her for the "amazing things" she has achieved.

She said: "She has set the bar, and (there are) exciting things to come for Kelly Gallagher."
