The Co Tyrone man won the 2011 Open Championship and was vice captain of this year's European Ryder Cup team which stormed to victory after an impressive comeback against the US at Medinah in Chicago.
The 44-year-old returned to a hero's welcome on the north coast last July, when he also brought the Open trophy to the Royal Portrush clubhouse for display.
He was honoured at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, alongside Gary Barlow and Kate Winslet.
The Take That singer-songwriter was rewarded for his services to the entertainment industry and to charity, after organising the Diamond Jubilee concert in June, while actress Winslet received a CBE for services to drama.
Posting about his big day on Twitter, Darren said he was "very proud" to be joined by his family for the occasion.
After receiving his award, he had joked: "The Open and Ryder Cup were much easier than this!"
