Mr McCarthy, who was 88 years old, joined the east Belfast team in 1947.

He spent eleven years at The Oval and played 417 games, scoring 22 goals and captaining Glentoran for seven years under manager Frank Grice.

Noel McCarthy's main position was left back, however he also featured at left half, centre half and even turned his hand to goalkeeping on one occasion against Coleraine.

His grandson is current Glentoran player Andrew Waterworth.

A statement on the club's website said: "On behalf of the President, Chairman, Board of Directors, Players and Staff of Glentoran Football Club we extend our deepest sympathy to Noel's family and in particular his grandson, Andrew Waterworth."

Noel McCarthy won two Irish League Championships, the Irish Cup, the City Cup, Ulster Cup and numerous other medals during his time with Glentoran.
