Newry City 0 - 3 Glentoran
Newry City, who are fighting against relegation at the bottom of the table, beat Glentoran at the Oval earlier this season and were eager to put in a repeat performance at home for what was Gerry Flynn's second game back in charge.
But Dean Fitzgerald fired the Glens into a first-half lead thanks to a low cross from Andy Waterworth.
After the break, Waterworth set up a fortunate second goal as his strike rebounded into the net allowing Michael Halliday to chest home his effort.
Man of the match Waterworth again outpaced the Newry defence in the dying minute of the game, firing home to seal the win for Glentoran on 89 minutes.
This was Scott Young's first win since making his managerial debut earlier this month.
Glentoran were disposed of by Linfield at the quarter-final stage of the Irish Cup and missed out on a semi-final spot in the Setanta Cup after drawing 1-1 with Bohemians at Dalymount Park last Saturday.
"Coming in Newry is never an easy game and the pitch wasn't the best", Young told UTV afterwards.
"Winning three-nil is fantastic"
The new Glens boss praised his back four and his goalkeeper for keeping a clean sheet.
The champions are five points behind Linfield in the title race, but the Blues still have a game in hand.
"I'm taking it game by game", Young told UTV.
"We're not completely out of it. Obviously the Blues are in the driving seat and in many ways it's theirs to lose but I think we've got six games left. The top teams will play each other and I'm sure points will be dropped."
Glentoran face Cliftonville at Solitude on Tuesday.
