The Belfast Giants lost out 4-2 to the Sheffield Steelers on Sunday night, despite an away win against the same side the night before.
In the second of the Giants' back-to-back matches in Sheffield, two goals from Jeff Szwez and one from Pierre-Luc Faubert weren't enough to steal the win from the Steelers.
The home side had opened the scoring through Jonathan Zion and reclaimed the lead after a Szwez equaliser with a goal from Kevin Balibruk.
It was Szwez who replied again, but efforts from Jeff Legue and Doug Sheppard kept the goals racking up for the Steelers.
The game ended 4-2 to the Steelers, a revenge for the 3-1 home defeat they suffered on Saturday night.
Cardiff Devils suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Edinburgh Capitals and bottom side Hull Stingrays won 5-3 at home to Newcastle Vipers.
Coventry Blaze strengthened their position at the top of the Elite League table with a 5-3 win at home to third-placed Nottingham Panthers.
This leaves the Belfast side five points off the leaders, with their league title hopes now resting with a Coventry collapse or a Giants' unbeaten run to the end of the season.
The two sides are set to go up against each other at the Odyssey Arena next Saturday.
