The hosts took the lead in the first period through an Omar Pacha powerplay goal.

However, within 34 seconds of the restart in the second period Colin Shields put the visitors level before Chris Higgins put them in front.

Jeffrey Szwez added to the scoring to put the Giants 3-1 up before the end of the second period.

The Belfast team continued to dominate in the final period but they could not take their chances until Kevin Saurette converted a powerplay goal in the dying moments.

Should the Giants hold onto their lead they will progress to next weekend's playoff finals in Nottingham.

Face-off in the Odyssey for the second leg is at 4pm on Sunday.
