The Giants started Sunday's match in the lead thanks to Evan Cheverie, who scored twice, and Tom Walsh, who scored once. Colin Shields also scored at the beginning of the second period to make it 4-0.

The Vipers then reduced the gap to 4-2.

But a powerplay goal from Tim Cook made it 5-2 for the home side.

Matic Kralj then made it 5-3 for the Vipers before going into the third period.

The Vipers then produced a brilliant comeback to win their first away game in 12, with only nine skaters.

They leveled at 5-5 thanks to two powerplay goals from Ryan Mahrle and Jason Tejchma, causing the game to go into overtime before the penalty shootout.

The Giants missed their three penalties against the impressive Vipers keeper while Jason Tejchma scored to complete the Vipers' stunning comeback.

Meanwhile, the Nottingham Panthers moved to the top of the Elite League with a 3-1 victory over the Coventry Blaze.

The Panthers' success pushed Blaze down into second spot in the standings.

The Cardiff Devils cut the gap to the third-placed Giants with a 3-2 win away to the Edinburgh Capitals.

In the night's other match, the Sheffield Steelers remain six points clear of bottom side Hull Stingrays despite losing 5-2 to the East Yorkshire side.
