The Belfast Giants made it six wins in a row when they won out over the Cardiff Devils on Sunday night in the Elite League - a day after securing a victory over Hull Stingrays.

The weekend's results mean the Giants face defending title holders, the Sheffield Steelers, holding on to their top spot in the league table.

Despite getting stranded in Cardiff due to the weather, there was no dampening the side's spirits.

Head coach Doug Christiansen was more than happy with their performances, after urging them to step up in the absence of their injured teammates.

"We haven't played our best hockey recently and I knew we were going to have to improve, especially without Beniot Doucet and Robert Dowd," he told the side's official website.

"The team responded the way I hoped. In my opinion, Cardiff is the toughest place in the league to win. For us to get six points in Cardiff is a massive accomplishment.

It fell to Jeff Mason to open the scoring for the Giants late in the first period on Sunday night, with Aaron Clarke adding to the tally before Jeremy Rebek put them out of sight on 3-0.

Cardiff threatened a rally, racking up goals from Phil Hill and Jeff Pierce to make it 3-2.

But the Giants picked up the win when, with just eight minutes on the clock, Nick Kuiper bagged his first goal for the side and saw them finish by retaining their earlier two-goal lead.

Christiansen paid special tribute to players Aaron Clarke, who netted two goals over the weekend, and "warrior" Adam Keefe.

"Clarke stepped up this weekend, he scored two big goals and the loss of Doucet has opened up an opportunity for him to be a go-to player," Christiansen said.

Of fan favourite Keefe, he added: "Adam Keefe has the toughest job in sports. He was a warrior all weekend. He fought both nights standing up for his teammates.

Before the game, I told the team they had a chance to be historic. There have been some excellent Giants teams, but no Giants team has ever won all of their league games in Cardiff.

"To win in Cardiff, you need to play on the edge. They have great fans who are into the game and make it difficult to stay focused. In addition to the fans, the Devils have 11 players over 6ft tall.

"For Keefe to battle their toughest players takes tremendous courage."

The Giants may have ended their trip stuck in Cardiff Airport, but they certainly proved their run of form wasn't going to come unstuck at the hands of the Devils.
