Former Giant Colin Shields was on target in the shoot-out as Doug Christiansen's side had to settle for a point after drawing the game in regulation time.
The Giants trailed 2-1 after the first period, Greg Stewart scoring the goal for the visitors.
But the Belfast side conceded two further goals in the second period to leave themselves with a mountain to climb.
However, Scott Champagne's goal gave them a glimmer of hope going into the final 20 minutes.
In the third period, the Giants staged a brave comeback and Noah Clarke joined Sam Roberts on the scoresheet to make it 4-4 and force overtime and the subsequent shoot-out.
