The Belfast Giants fell to a controversial overtime defeat at the hands of the Sheffield Steelers on Friday.

The Elite League leaders went down 2-1 at the Motorpoint Arena in Yorkshire.

Things started off brightly for the Giants when John Pelle swept home for the game's opening score in the first period.

Their defence held firm throughout the rest of the game until a lapse of concentration at the back with less than a minute left on the clock allowed the Steelers to equalise.

That took the game to overtime, where the Steelers nicked it with a disputed goal from Jeff Legue - as replays showed that it should have been struck off for offside.

Doug Christiansen was left furious at the end, but the Giants must pick themselves back up for their game away to Fife Flyers on Saturday.

Meanwhile second-placed Nottingham cashed in on the result - they crushed Edinburgh 6-2 to move to within four points of the Giants.
