The Belfast Giants could not follow up Saturday's win over Sheffield, when they fell to a 4-1 defeat 24 hours later at the Cardiff Devils.
Things started positively for the Odyssey Arena side though when Pat Bateman gave them the lead, before efforts from Matt Towe and Gerard Adams had Cardiff in the lead by the end of the first period.
Wes Jarvis then scored to make it three for Cardiff and the win was secured when Mark Richardson also found the net.
The result continued the Giants disappointing record away from home..
Steve Thornton's men have fallen four points behind Elite League-leading Coventry Blaze who have also played two games less than the Giants.
On Sunday, Coventry Blaze overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Newcastle Vipers 4-2.
Elsewhere, the Nottingham Panthers stunned the Hull Stingrays with five goals in the third period to win 6-3 and the Sheffield Steelers demolished the Edinburgh Capitals 8-0.
Belfast will be hoping to bounce back in their next game when they welcome Edinburgh at the Odyssey Arena.
