Phil Hill fired past Murphy just after the 10-minute mark in the first period on a feed from Scott Matzka to propel the Devils into the lead.
Jeff Mason brought the Giants back on level terms at 25'49 with a one-time shot on the power play, converting a pass from Benoit Doucet.
To only score one goal when you have that many opportunities is just not good enough.

It wasn't long though before the Devils restored their advantage as Kenton Smith skated in on Murphy unchallenged before calmly floating the puck beyond the outstretched Giants netminder to make it 2-1.
The Giants piled on the pressure for the remainder of the game.
The majority of the play took place in the Devils end of the rink, but the Cardiff defence and netminder Stevie Lyle stood firm to claim the two points and a much-needed away win.
Giants coach Doug Christiansen said the team needs to be more clinical in front of goal.
"Unfortunately for us we're just not putting the puck away at the moment," he told UTV.
"Defensively we were pretty good, we held them to 19 shots over the night and we killed off their power play.
"But I think out forwards need to find a way to start producing because at the minute we aren't scoring enough goals."
Meanwhile the Nottingham Panthers closed the gap on the Elite League leaders as they recorded a 1-0 shutout over Sheffield Steelers.
Edinburgh Capitals defeated Dundee Stars 3-2 after overtime and Braehead Clan consigned Fife Flyers to their 13th consecutive loss after they thrashed them 10-1.
In the Challenge Cup, Hull Stingrays were held to 2-2 draw against Coventry Blaze.
