The Belfast Giants have consolidated their spot at the top of the Elite League following a 3-2 away win over Braehead Clan on Friday night, which ended with a penalty shootout.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Giants took the lead early in the second period with Aaron Clarke grabbing his eighth goal of the season.

The Clan pulled one back on the powerplay at 8:50 of the second period when player/coach Drew Bannister fired one past Stephen Murphy to make it 1-1.

Newest signing right winger Mike Wirll scored his first goal of the season for the Clan to put them in front 2-1 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game, but the Giants newest signing Paul Deniset got his first of the season to tie the game 2-2 two minutes later.

Neither team could break the deadlock in overtime, so the game was decided by a penalty shootout.

Jeff Mason and Jade Galbraith both scored for their respective teams.

Robert Dowd then found the back of the net for the Giants before Wirll missed for the Clan, handing the win to the league leaders.

The victory keeps Belfast clear of Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers at the top of the table.
