The Vipers clinched their second win in three games by beating Nottingham Panthers 5-3.

The Giants joined them on five points, albeit having played a game more, after they defeated reigning champions Sheffield Steelers 4-2.

With just under 4 minutes left in Sunday nights clash with the Steelers the LBM Belfast Giants trailed Sheffield 2-1.

Four minutes later and a scrap between Pat Bateman and Randy Dangenais had gave the Giants the momentum to seal both points as goals from Evan Cheverie, Craig Peacock and an empty netter from Colin Shields gave the team from Northern Ireland a gritty win on the road.

In the Challenge Cup, Cardiff Devils kicked-off their campaign with a 5-2 win over Hull Stingrays.
