Dermott Monteith has died
Former Ireland captain and Middlesex bowler Dermott Monteith has died at the age of 66.

Co Antrim born Monteith represented Ireland 76 times, captaining them on 38 occasions, in a 19-year career from 1965 to 1984.

He remains the country's leading wicket-taker, with 326 at 17.37, while he scored 1712 runs at 20.63, including nine half-centuries.

Monteith, who was from Lisburn, played for Middlesex in the 1981 and 1983 seasons and also toured Africa with the MCC before becoming an administrator.

He was president of the Irish Cricket Union in 1999 and served as national selector for many years.

Ireland manager Roy Torrens led the tributes to his former team-mate.

Torrens said: "He was quite simply a magnificent cricketer, and he was a pioneer in many ways, being one of the first Irishmen in the modern era to make a mark in county cricket.

"He certainly didn't look out of place amongst the county elite despite being 38-years-old when he played his first games for Middlesex."
