Ulster back-row forward Stephen Ferris underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a tendon injury sustained in a PRO 12 game against Edinburgh on 2 November.

The 27-year-old has missed three PRO 12 games because of the injury, as well as Ireland's autumn internationals.

Ulster confirmed that Ferris will be reviewed in the coming weeks to establish when exactly he will return to action.

He will therefore miss the Heineken Cup double header against Northampton Saints, and will likely to not be involved in league fixtures against local rivals Leinster and Munster at the end of December.

And with further European clashes against Glasgow Warriors and Castres in January, the Ulster setup will hope he makes a quicker than expected recovery.
