Irish rugby flanker Stephen Ferris has been cited for foul play following Ireland loss in Dublin to Wales in the opening 6 Nations match.

Ferris was shown the yellow card for his tackle on Welsh lock Ian Evans in the last minute of the match.

Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny kicked the resulting penalty to give his team a 23-21 victory.

Ferris' yellow card followed on from Wales lock Bradley Davies sin-binning for a reckless tip-tackle on Ireland replacement Donnacha Ryan.

The Ulster forward will appear in front of the 6 Nations championship disciplinary committee in London on Wednesday.

Ireland team manager Michael Kearney said he is confident Ferris will escape a ban for an incident that many felt did not even warrant the yellow card he received from referee Wayne Barnes.

"We are very disappointed to hear this," said Kearney.

"He does have an exemplary disciplinary record.

"He has played 31 times for Ireland and has never received so much as a yellow card.

"The last yellow card he received was more than two years ago (with Ulster) and he has never once received a yellow card for any form of foul play.

"We are hopeful that we will get the right result tomorrow," he said.
