An announcement is expected to take place in the coming days as to who will take over from outgoing Blues boss David Jeffrey, who is due to step down after 17 years in charge.

Former Northern Ireland striker Feeney is reportedly set to be named as his replacement.

Ballymena manager Glenn Ferguson said: "There is a lot of talk of Warren Feeney coming in.

"Warren has the background of being an out and out Linfield supporter - he will have the enthusiasm and desire that David has had, but whether he can duplicate what David has done over the years remains to be seen. He is young. He is going into it with no managerial experience."

Jeffrey will lead Linfield out for the final time against Glenavon at Mourneview Park on Saturday.

He has been with the club since 1982, when he first joined as a player, before going on to rack up an impressive 31 trophies as manager.

Blues player Sean Ward said: "He is just so passionate, he really is. He is just a figurehead of Linfield.

"He is like a father figure to everybody, he just shows that much trust in his players and such belief and he really is just an outstanding human being and he is such a great person for Irish League football. He is one of those characters that the league has not seen in quite a while."

He said in the past it wasn't for him. If he is pressurised by media to take the job he probably won't do a good job.
