The Donegal centre-back beat off stiff opposition from team-mates Frank McGlynn and Colm McFadden at this year's GAA GPA All-Stars awards.
Mayo's Cillian O'Connor was selected as the Young Footballer of the Year ahead of Donegal's Paddy McBrearty and Meath's Donal Keogan.
O'Connor is the first player to win the award twice.
Meanwhile, Kilkenny's Henry Shefflin was named as the GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year for 2012.
The nine-time All-Ireland winner beat off opposition from Galway's Joe Canning and team-mate Paul Murphy.
Shefflin, who also scooped an 11th All Star award at the Convention Centre, landed the award for the third time, after receiving the accolade in 2002 and 2006.
Galway's Johnny Coen was named as the Young Hurler of the Year following his performance in the All-Ireland finalists' defence.
