Mark Allen put his dispute with Barry Hearn to one side as he reached the quarter-finals of the UK Championship with a comfortable 6-2 win over Ali Carter.

Allen was referred to the game's governing body following a four-letter rant against the World Snooker chairman.

On Monday, he accused the veteran promoter of making snooker too much like darts and looking to "make money for himself".

The 25-year-old also claimed Hearn's attitude was one of "f*** the players".

He could now be charged with bringing the game into disrepute. There may also be repercussions away from the table after Hearn called the tirade "slanderous" and said will be taking legal advice.

On Wednesday night, Allen turned up for his post-match press conference with his mouth covered by a piece of tape. He sat silent for around 15 seconds, before eventually removing the tape.

He said: "I don't think I said too much out of line. Obviously I swore, which is bang out of order and I apologise again for that, but I still stand by the rest of the things I said.

I think there's a lot of truth in the comments that I made.

"I've had lots of criticism over the years and I'm not going to change that now just because I'm outspoken and speak my mind. Other players just don't have the balls to do it."

Despite the controversy, Allen breezed past a below-par Carter at York's Barbican Centre.

After Carter had failed to take advantage of an early opportunity, an assured break of 78 gave him the first frame.

Carter hit back by taking a scrappy second, despite initially breaking down on frame ball, but Allen swiftly re-established his advantage with a fluent 101 in frame three.

The Englishman played a host of loose shots to slip 3-1 down at the mid-session interval.

Carter did manage to claim the fifth frame, but a confident Allen then overturned sizeable deficits in the next two with runs of 72 and 67 respectively, and it was not long before he completed a routine victory.

The Northern Irishman will face Marco Fu in the last eight after the Hong Kong cueman inflicted a shock 6-3 defeat on world number one and bookmakers' favourite Mark Selby.
