Cup upset keeps Rodgers in transfer hunt

Carnlough native Brendan Rodgers will keep hunting for players to add depth to his struggling Liverpool squad, following their shock FA Cup exit at the hands of League One side Oldham Athletic.

Rodgers was left bitterly disappointed when Liverpool fell to a 3-2 defeat at Oldham's Boundary Park on Sunday, highlighting the need to keep building the squad to avoid over-reliance on key players.

He's hoping to snap up at least one more signing before the January transfer window closes, but admits: "I've always said that it's going to take a few windows for us to get the squad competitive."

The window is due to close on Thursday.

"If we can add another player - if not more - then great. If not, we'll look in the summer to keep the building process going," Rodgers said, speaking at a press conference ahead of this week's game against Arsenal.

Congratulations to Oldham - you can't take it away from them, as bitterly disappointed as we are. If they fight like that, they shouldn't be down where they are in the league.

Of the shock defeat by Oldham, Rodgers simply said his young side had played poorly and then been punished for it.

"I was disappointed with the young players," he admitted.

"We're trying to give them experience and let them see what it's like to play for Liverpool ...

"It's not enough to play for Liverpool and get up for the Arsenal and Manchester City games.

"If you're going to win trophies and go far in competitions, you need to be able to come to places like this (against League One sides) and win. We weren't good enough for that."

Liverpool were boosted by the arrival off the bench of captain Steven Gerrard, but Rodgers has defended his decision not to start him.

"I can't rely on Steven for 70 games. He's been absolutely incredible. He shouldn't be expected to have to come and win games on his own every single game," he said.

Liverpool are next in action away to Arsenal on Wednesday night.
