Cuban boxers have dominated Olympic boxing over the last 30 years winning 36 gold medals during that time and are regarded as one of the top nations in the sport.

Confirmation of the agreement that would see the Cubans hold their training camp here is due in the next few days.

The camp would be based at Queen's University Belfast's Physical Education Centre in south Belfast.

The Cubans will be joining the Australian boxing team who have already confirmed they are coming to Northern Ireland.

It's expected between 8 to 10 Cuban boxers will take part in the London Olympics and all of them are medal contenders.

Their presence in the city in the run up to the August 2012 Olympic Games could see other nations choose Belfast as their training base.

If the arrival is confirmed in the coming days, it would be a huge boost to the amateur sport in the city that has produced more than its fair share of Oympians and world champions over the years.
