Belfast boxer Michael Conlon has lost by a single point in his quarter final tie at the AIBA World Championships in Azerbaijan.

The flyweight was defeated 25-24 by the current European champion Andrew Selby.

The 19-year-old from St John Bosco BC put in an impressive performance in his search for a medal, but was unable to overcome his Welsh opponent.

Selby, who claimed gold at the European Championships in Turkey early this year, won the first round 7-4 and ultimately that secured victory, as 19-year-old Conlon, in his first year boxing senior, won the next two rounds 10-9 and 10-9 only to find himself one point in arrears at the final bell.

By reaching the last 16 of the World Amateur Championships in Baku, Conlon has qualified for Ireland's 2012 Olympic squad.
