The 20-year-old, who got a bye in the first round, beat Duke Micah of Ghana on Friday.
It was a confident display from the Team Ireland fighter who took the first round 5-2 and the second and third 7-3.
He faces France's Nordine Oubali in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile his teammate Paddy Barnes, also of Belfast, will be in action on Saturday when he takes on Thomas Essomba of Cameroon in the light-flyweight division.
