A spirited Cliftonville battled for the win as Coleraine were made to fight all the way before clinching their place in the semi-finals of the CIS Cup.

It took an injury time goal from substitute Stephen Dooley to settle the nerves after the Reds did everything in their power to turn around their first leg deficit.

In the end their efforts were in vain and the Bannsiders now join Glentoran, Dungannon Swifts and Portadown in next Tuesday's draw.

It was the home side who had the first real opportunity to gain the upper hand on 18 minutes when a defence splitting pass from Tommy McCallion sent Gareth Tommons clear but he shot wide with only John Connolly to beat.

There was plenty of endeavour - but few openings - from either side but tensions rose as half-time approached and Cliftonville coach Paul Trainor was sent to the stand for dissent.

Eddie Patterson's side, buoyed by their weekend league win at Linfield, knew they required two goals to progress in the tie and they went all out to achieve their goal.

Playing some excellent football, they had Coleraine on the back foot constantly and Davy O'Hare pulled off some super saves.

The 'keeper denied the excellent Liam Boyce who met Ciaran Caldwell's 53rd minute corner with a powerful header.

At the other end, Stephen Carson went on a driving run before firing just over the crossbar - one of Coleraine's few attacking threats during the second period.

'run of play'

Cliftonville gave themselves hope when they took the lead after 57 minutes. Boyce easily brushed off Marc Mukendi before delivering a superb cross and Chris Scannell headed home from close range.

Four minutes later O'Hare raced off his line to block a Boyce effort with his legs and Kieran O'Connor blasted the follow-up over the crossbar.

The pressure continued and on 71 minutes O'Connor was played in by George McMullan but O'Hare again made a crucial block.

Two minutes from time McMullan tried his luck with a free-kick which was touched over for a corner.

Referee Alan Black waved aside penalty appeals in the final minute when Caldwell played the ball close to McCallion's hand.

But all the efforts were in vain when Coleraine settled the issue against the run of play deep into injury time.

Carson released Darren Boyce and his low cross into the box was drilled home by winger Dooley.
