The 2011 Champion had posted a couple of impressive scores on rounds two and three to start the final round on 15-under, and picked up four birdies on the front nine to move to within three of the lead.
However, Clarke followed another birdie at the 10th with back-to-back bogeys on 14 and 15 which saw his challenge fall away.
The Dungannon man can take plenty of positives from his performances in Scotland during the tournament after enduring a largely unsuccessful 2013.
Michael Hoey appeared to be the best-placed of the local players heading into Day 4 at St Andrews, but birdies at the 5th and 10th holes were undone by dropped shots at 9, 14 And 17 as he could only manage a 1-over 73 to finish on 14-under.
